Before the attainment of Ghana's Independence, the Police Service depended largely on expatriate officers, while a few Ghanaian policemen of the inspectorate rank were selected for training in British Police Institutions, notably Hendon and Bramshill.
Following Ghana's independence, the need to develop a wholly indigenous police leadership led to the establishment of the then Ghana Police College, now the Ghana Police Academy, in 1959. On 4th February 1959, the first batch of 14 Cadet Officers began the maiden course at the Academy.
To provide advanced academic and practical training that develops responsible, community-oriented, and resourceful Senior Police leaders, equipped with leadership, strategic and operational skills necessary to uphold the core values of the Ghana Police Service in ensuring public safety and security.
